- W2489627360 abstract "This chapter attempts a narrative history in these terms of a poem that provides an interesting case-study of textual interplay: Wordsworth’s ‘Lines written a few miles above Tintern Abbey, on revisiting the banks of the Wye during a tour, July 13, 1798’. Traditionally proclaimed a ‘great’ work in the old canonical sense, the poem has seemed to encourage, particularly in its sublime passages, notions of transcendence. But something has been lost of the way its power as a poem lies not in how it works at a different level from other texts, but in how it is rooted in them and grows from them. Keats’s ‘egotistical sublime’ is such a wonderful idea that the phrase has been allowed to define the poem unhelpfully. In some ways it is a profoundly unegotistical document. The ‘I’ of the poem is a voice that throughout, echoes and mirrors others, and the self that it seeks is valued for the relation it bears to earlier selves, not for its un-dependence. Its moments of sublimation discover what is ‘interfused’ at a deep level. Alongside the individual recollected history (so easily mistaken for egotism) there is what might be termed a bio-history in its literary relations, and this is what specifically concerns the chapter." @default.
