- W2489728649 abstract "Coleridge’s attempts to develop his notebook theories into public form immediately met difficulties, and an understanding of these is needed if we are to see why his public writing so often lapsed into self-apology, self-justification, fragmentation and even plagiarism. Furthermore, Coleridge’s difficulty in finding a public for his ideas actually influenced the content of his theories, increasing the tendency developed in the years of isolation to derive accounts of language from introspective investigations of his own mind. Coleridge had not ceased to want a language of social unity, but, lacking the ready admiration of a public audience or readership, he could not, as before, derive it from his own experience as speaker and author. As Deirdre Coleman has shown, this resulted in a confusion of aim, tone and intended audience in The Friend, which offended the Quakers who made up a large part of the subscribers and which left Coleridge’s political philosophy torn between the recommendation of principle and the acceptance of expediency.1 This was noticed at the time by Hazlitt, whose comments must have seemed ironic to an author hoping in The Friend to escape from a private language of cipher, code and inscription: ‘This work is so obscure, that it has been supposed to be written in cypher, and that it is necessary to read it upwards and downwards, or backwards and forwards, as it happens, to make head or tail of it.’2" @default.
