- W2489772707 abstract "The political attachments we shall explore hinge on how citizens understand the world, identify its problems, and conceive the possibilities for reacting to these. They are anchored in subjective appraisal. Clearly the image of homo economicus conjured by rational-choice approaches is unsuited to their study (Downs 1957). Such models work best as exercises in deductive reasoning, and the difficulties which arise in their empirical application have been well documented and need not be repeated.1 Moreover, they point to an interest-based conception of political community, something we have had reason to criticise. Nor can we be guided by homo sociologicus, the protagonist of much classical social theorising who plays out his role in a social totality held together by forces of production, the division of labour, or behaviour-determining values and norms. Holism of this kind, despite the appearance of radical divergence from the individualism of economic approaches, tends to share the basic assumption that the ideational is epiphenomenal, that order is achieved independently of people’s interpretation (Reckwitz 2002).2 Further, in its image of society as the outcome of normative consensus, it supposes the kind of maximalist conception of the common one may wish to avoid. This work therefore concentrates on those approaches to citizenship and mass politics broadly classifiable as interpretative." @default.
