- W2489826019 abstract "This chapter explores the evolution of the Amniote. The Amniote egg presumably evolved from anamniote egg that gave rise via direct development to fully formed, precocial young. The precursor egg, like eggs of extant amphibians, were enclosed by a capsule composed of the vitelline membrane jelly layers. The shell membrane provided physical support that the capsule alone could not supply and the transfer of water from the jelly to the yolk functionally eliminated the jelly from the Yolk, which functionally eliminated spaces between the diffusion of gases between the egg and its environment. One view of the evolution of Amniotes from anamniotes concludes that the transition was made by species of relatively small adult size that presumably laid eggs similar in many respects to the direct developing eggs of a variety of extant amphibians. The ancestral egg probably was oviposited in terrestrial environments and thus might not have been in contact with free standing water. Several lines of evidence indicate that the barriers to diffuse movement of oxygen through the jelly hinders the metabolism of embryos of contemporary amphibians late in development, particularly in large eggs or in eggs naturally incubated at higher temperatures." @default.
