- W2489897468 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter presents the methodology for the quantification of macrophage and monocyte chemotaxis in vitro and in vivo and discusses the factors that are chemotactic for macrophages. Macrophages are phagocytic, wandering cells with intracellular digestive properties and promote wound healing by eliminating tissue debris and fibrin deposits. In immunologically mediated inflammation, macrophages function to degrade antigens and phagocytize neutrophil debris. These processes are essential to host defense and depend upon the rapid accumulation of an adequate number of cells at local tissue sites where antigen or tissue breakdown products are concentrated. The availability of new in vitro methods for quantifying human monocyte chemotaxis has allowed evaluation of this important biological function in various disease states. An abnormality in ability of the host to mobilize leukocytes rapidly to sites of immunological reactions could result in the ineffective elimination of foreign substances and render the host more susceptible to infectious and neoplastic diseases. Indeed, most patients with the neoplastic diseases have depressed monocyte chemotactic responsiveness, and neoplasms themselves may directly cause defective macrophage accumulation in vivo." @default.
