- W2489984154 abstract "People-induced geophysical risk is increasing as populations grow, technology advances and urban settlements expand. Some increases in risk, such as those of seismicity induced by reservoirs, underground mining, removal of fluids [oil or water], and deep excavations are well documented. Land reclamation and artificial landform creation lead to new risks. Nonetheless, many aggravated, or apparently new, geophysical risks are more difficult to trace back to specific human activities. Upland land clearance or mining activity is often blamed for flooding in lowland urban areas and deltas. However, while land clearance locally changes river regimes and increases sediment yields, downstream modification of river channels and occupation of floodplains increases human vulnerability. Dams and reservoirs trap sediments and modify flows. Catastrophic floods may involve no more runoff than previous rare floods, but become catastrophic because of the numbers of people at risk and the infrastructure and resources that are now vulnerable when levees are overtopped. Evaluation of geophysical risks must take an integrated approach, to ensure that the resources available for risk reduction and hazard mitigation are spent in the most effective manner." @default.
