- W2490525921 abstract "Glycomics is the scientific effort to explore, characterize, and study all of the carbohydrate structures produced by a defined system. This can be performed at the level of the whole organism, or an individual cell or tissue type. This chapter discusses the efforts made towards the whole-system analysis of the N-and O-glycomes of mouse and human tissues. The mouse has provided the glycobiological community with a wealth of important information about the function of glycans within a mammalian system. By utilizing genetically modified mice deficient in certain glycosyltransferases, the importance of specific glycan epitopes are investigated. There is growing recognition of the role glycosylation plays in a variety of human diseases including cancers, congenital muscular dystrophies, autoimmune diseases, and neurological disorders. Detailed knowledge of the structure and nature of the glycans and receptors involved in such interactions provides improved diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. Though much of the N-and O-glycosylation biosynthetic pathway is conserved between mammals, there are a few well-defined differences. The most obvious similarities and differences observed amongst the glycomic profiles of mouse and human tissues are summarized. Knowing the glycome of these tissues is a vital step towards investigating the roles that glycans play in cell communication." @default.
