- W2490630106 abstract "“Mechanoelectric transduction” in the title describes a broad-based biophysic phenomenon in which a mechanical stimulus is transduced into an electrical signal. The term “feedback” is appended, for it underlies a regulatory biophysic control and a pathophysiologic role. Also, the phenomenon is being increasingly referred to as such. A possibly subversive notion is slowly emerging: this phenomenon has a greater potential role in cardiac physiology and pathophysiology than generally appreciated. This is not surprising. The heart's elemental physiologic function is mechanical, and most of its pathology invokes some mechanical derangement or other. (Teleologically, the electricity is there to drive the life-giving mechanical pump.) It is also not surprising, therefore, that mechanoelectric transduction/feedback rears up in protean guises from “cell to bedside.” This variable expression has prompted the approach in this chapter, which begins with an accent on transduction and then describes its prevalence using theoretical and pathophysiologic considerations. It seemed economical not to transpose illustrations of the broad-ranging and previously published data but to condense them into general and diagrammatical portrayals.
