This creates new communities of converts based on shared religious experiences. The Old Testament understanding of conversion as turning from other gods towards Yahweh comes to fulfillment in the New Testament where conversion means accepting Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. Thus although in the Christendom era and in non-Western cultures such as Africa attempts were made to link religion with national identity, in conservative evangelical Christianity the idea of conversion as a personal “born-again” experience has been strongly sustained. Conversion is connected to national identity only to the extent that countries may be predominantly Christian. In terms of religious identity the emphasis may be placed more on the community of faith than religious orientation as part of a political establishment." @default.
