• W2491739999 abstract "Abstract In this paper, we report the properties of sodium dodecyl sulfate – 1-butanol mixed micelles. The ionic equilibrium of a series of indicator dyes with different charge types, neutral red, methyl yellow, n-decylfluorescein, N,N/-di-n-octadecylrhodamine, quinaldine red, pinacyanol, pseudoisocyanine, and the standard solvatochromic Reichardt’s dye were studied in SDS micellar solutions in water, in the presence of 0.80 M n-C4H9OH. The apparent ionization constants, K a app , of the indicators are substantially influenced by additions of 1-butanol; the decrease in the p K a app values is within the range of 0.24–1.84. Both entire SDS micelles and mixed SDS – 1-butanol aggregates display expressed differentiating influence on the acid-base properties of the attached indicator dyes; the p K a app – p K a (in water) values vary from +2.65 to −1.60 in SDS micelles and from +1.53 to −1.85 in the mixed surfactant–alcohol aggregates. Whereas the slope of the p K a app dependence of neutral red vs. log [ N a w + ] allowed estimating the degree of counter-ion binding in entire SDS micelles, β  = 0.71 ± 0.02, the corresponding value is β ′  = 0.39 ± 0.03 at 0.80 M n-C4H9OH indicates the decrease in the interfacial concentration of the anionic head groups within the Stern layer. The electrical potential Ψ of the Stern layer becomes less negative by 26 mV, as evaluated using the indicator N,N/-di-n-octadecylrhodamine. The above Ψ and β values have been used for calculating the molar fraction of 1-butanol in the mixed micelles and the partition constant of the alcohol between the aqueous phase and micelles.
