- W2492030653 abstract "Aflatoxins are secondary metabolites produced by certain fungal species which are known to infect key feedstuffs used in poultry production. Once produced in the feed ingredient by the mold, they are relatively stable molecules and, if consumed by the animal, aflatoxins can cause significant effects to their growth, immune status, organ function, and overall health. The smectite layers of bentonite clays have been shown to capture aflatoxins, making them unavailable for absorption by the GI tract. For this reason, poultry producers have been interested in evaluating these clays as a potential feed additive to protect against the toxic effects of aflatoxins that may be present in the feed. Adding the bentonite clays into poultry diets can act as a form of “insurance” to protect against aflatoxins if they are present in the feed." @default.
