National Library of Medicine (PubMed). ABSTRACT Strength training and its efficacy in treating obesity: a systematic reviewIntroduction: Scientific evidence have shown positive results in the applicability of strength training in treating obesity - a multifactor chronic disease that has been considered a severe worldwide epidemic. Objective: To demonstrate through systematic review the applicability of strength training and its efficacy in treating obesity. Methods: General and specific bases approaching the theme were used from the following data bases: Virtual Health Library (Bireme), Google Scholar, LILACS, Scientific Electronic Library Online (Scielo), and the United States National Library of Medicine (PubMed). Papers published between 2000 and 2014 have been selected. Results: Studies analyzed have presented positive results in the applicability of strength training and its efficacy in treating obesity. Its practice improves on quality of life, health, aesthetics, and it has been efficient when applied to obesity treatment. Strength training, particularly when intense, generates large calorie expense during exercise, while promoting greater excess post-exercise oxygen consumption, maintaining rest metabolism increased for several hours as well as preserving the muscular mass which tends to decrease on weight loss programs. Conclusions: Several studies with positive results have been made on strength training and its efficacy in training obesity, which shows that it is effective when applied during weight loss programs, especially when combined with other elements such as dietary reeducation." @default.
