- W2492389658 abstract "This chapter surveys the angelological doctrines of Clement against the background of Jewish and philosophic-religious streams of late antiquity. The only extant patristic monograph on angelology from the age of antiquity is the Celestial Hierarchy of Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite from the late 5th century AD. The notion of the seven highest angelic spirits stems from the old Jewish tradition. Clement of Alexandria is one of the authors of the second century who employ angelomorphic terminology in his Christology. Clement's pneumatology receives substantially less treatment. On the basis of his cosmology progress is understood by him as an ascent. The idea of the spiritual ascent of the human soul through different heavens was also current in Gnosticism. Clement of Alexandria mentions various theories of the origin of Greek philosophy; one of them is the myth of the fall of angels from 1Enoch . Keywords:angelological doctrines; late antiquity; celestial hierarchy ; Clement; Jewish tradition; philosophic-religious streams; pneumatology; spiritual ascent" @default.
