- W2492410262 abstract "In spring 2006 an anniversary issue of the New Zealand youth culture magazine Pavement featured ‘Lost Youth’, a collection of photographic portraits of young people, mostly aged 15–19, accompanied by each young person’s narrative. In some of the images, young women were posed in explicitly sexual postures and ‘dressed’ in ways typically seen in Playboy magazine. But it was an image of 10-year-old Jessica Thompson in the collection that met with a hostile public reaction. The head and shoulders image of Jessica depicted her gazing directly at the camera, her lips parted and coated with bright red lipstick. This image drew claims of inappropriate sexualization, most vociferously from a child advocacy group which laid a complaint with the Broadcasting Standards Authority. In her narrative, Jessica described herself as ‘just an average’ girl who liked sleepovers and raising chickens, loved her teddy bear and enjoyed doing modelling work. Countering claims of her daughter’s sexualization, Jessica’s mother told news media her daughter had liked to play with make-up from an early age. Around the same time as Jessica’s appearance in Pavement magazine, the Australia Institute Corporate paedophilia report was released, generating its own set of alarming concerns about the sexualization of children in, through and by media. Both of these media-highlighted events raised important questions for us, as researchers, about the meanings of ‘child sexualization’ and the substance to claims that girls were being sexualized by ‘sexualizing’ media images." @default.
