Compared to plasma, blood cells, particularly neutrophil, lymphocyte, and platelet, are rich in taurine, while red blood cells contain lesser taurine. Taurine involves blood cell synthesis, growth, differentiation, maturation, stabilization, optimal function, and apoptosis. In neutrophils and monocytes, taurine possesses anti-oxidative activity by reacting with hypochlorous acid to form taurine chloramine. Although cell oxidative stress is one of the important processes for pathogen destruction by leucocytes, too much oxidative stress limits the phogocytic activity and accelerates leucocytic apoptosis. Taurine chloramine is a lesser oxidant which optimizes the phagocytosis and delays cell apoptosis. In addition, taurine and its derivatives improve cell-mediated and humoral immunity, as supported by both in vitro and in vivo experiments. In platelets, taurine stabilizes platelet activity and prevents platelet aggregation. Thus, taurine deficiency in either perinatal or adult life alters hematologic properties and impairs immune function, while taurine supplementation or a diet high in taurine improves human health and physical performance. These lines of evidence allow taurine to be an important component in energy drinks and healthy nutritional products. However, clinical applications of taurine are still limited and need to be studied more in humans." @default.
