- W2492812752 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the evaluation of residential care as a method of social work intervention. Social workers have a love-hate relationship with research. This is no less true of the residential social workers than of social workers in community-based settings. They wish their help to be effective and therefore, should be keen to use research to improve the effectiveness of their practice. Yet simultaneously, they are frightened that the research will reveal that their help is marginally effective at best and at worst actually damaging to residents. Facing up to research and evaluation of practice requires courage and a willingness to change. Research is often surrounded by a mystique of science and sophisticated statistical prowess. However, practitioners too easily forget that research is grounded in curiosity and a desire to find out. Its self-containment, with an identifiable boundary, has proved attractive to social scientists. Social work is frequently criticized for a lack of research, yet in residential care there is an abundance of studies, though often negative in character." @default.
