- W2492989767 abstract "Romanticism has a philosophical basis which must be understood if we are to read its works intelligently. We shall examine the indispensable elements of this world view and their relations in the following chapters, but we may begin by stressing the Romantic passion for unity, a lively unity within a rich diversity. A potential unity of purpose, for example, of literature, philosophy, science, religion and mythology provided a motive and energy for much Romantic speculation and aspiration. The celebration of imagination and symbol as synthesising powers capable of reconciling oppositions and producing continually novel combinations may be understood in relation to this powerful drive towards comprehensiveness, Coleridge’s multeity in unity. A preoccupation with unity seems to be connected with a preference for idealism. Romantic systems of thought were also, therefore, dominated by a persistent and pervasive strain of idealism and an elitist psychology which emphasised the self-consciousness of exceptional men, who were also thought to be capable of drawing from profound layers of unconscious thought." @default.
