- W2493318757 abstract "The French Flemish coastal plain corresponds to the southern end of the extended lowlands that develop along the North Sea coast between Denmark and France. The aim of this study was to reconstruct the evolution of the Holocene deposits of the plain. It was achieved using core information from a large database combined with new cores and, for the first time in this area, the interpretation of very high-resolution seismic profiles along the coastal plain waterways. The results highlight the role of tides in the Holocene record despite the present-day wave-dominated coastal morphology. The definition of seven lithofacies and the determination of clay minerals, foraminifera and pollen assemblages led to the distinction of three main facies associations representative of the Holocene infill, all of them being dominated by tidal processes: subtidal sand facies, mud flats and marsh-swamp facies. They are grouped into two sedimentary units: A channel-belt unit at the base, overlain by an extended tidal flat unit infilling all the remaining available accommodation space. The distribution and geometry of these units are displayed thanks to several cross-sections covering most of the plain and allowing a pseudo-3D reconstruction. The stratigraphic organisation shows an aggradational channel-belt unit preserved landward, and a progradational tidal flat unit, preserved in the axis of the palaeoriver and in the seaward part of the plain. The arrangement of these Holocene units reveals the infilling process of the area due to the interaction of the rate of sea-level rise, accommodation space, marine sediment supply and the coastal hydrodynamic conditions dominated by a macrotidal regime and influenced by wave action." @default.
