- W2493786088 abstract "The Ambassadors, to Henry James in the considered retrospect of his Prefaces, ‘the best, “all round”, of all my productions’, seemed to F. R. Leavis in the 1940s ‘so feeble a piece of word-spinning that I should have been inclined to dismiss it as merely senile if James hadn’t himself provided an explanation in telling us that it had been conceived as a short story’.1 F. O. Matthiessen filled out the story by supposing that Strether himself was deeply in love with Mme de Vionnet and claiming that it was the development of her character that gave the novel ‘the stamina to survive the dated flavour of Strether’s liberation’.2 Quentin Anderson still more gratuitously elaborated the novel into part of a symbolic treatment of the religion that James’s father had constructed.3 Even a generation later, Leon Edel, in the introduction to his edition, was still stressing the supposed simplicity of the tale: ’Strether has come to bring Chad home: now he believes Chad should stay. And Chad on his side — to compound the irony — is quite prepared to leave. This is almost all the “plot” to be found in the novel.’ Leavis, judging so differently, was yet reacting to the same supposed simplicity: ‘The Ambassadors I judge to be an utter failure; it hasn’t a theme capable of sustaining treatment at novel length.’4" @default.
