- W2493791986 abstract "From Dombey and Son onwards, the city’s filth comes to replace and update the gothic mechanisms of castle walls and ghosts in Dickens. That dirt can function in this way when required, however, speaks volumes about the language in which contemporary debate on sanitary reform was expressed. Indeed, whether overt or covert, religious elements can be seen throughout a range of discourses that address the theme of dirt in the Victorian era. Throughout his work, Dickens both reflects and interrogates many of these. In his modes of representing the disease-ridden parts of London, polemical factors compete with generic factors, secular discourses with religious discourses and, in terms of style, journalistic realism vies with neo-gothicism and anticipations of surrealism. In the perception of Dickens and his contemporaries, there were various types of obscurity and death created by London’s dirt, requiring various forms of revelation and regeneration as an antidote to them." @default.
