- W2493818881 abstract "Happiness is a concept that links the philosophy of psychology with ethics. It is often thought of as an emotion, hence psychological, but also as the ultimate goal of life, and so ethical. Perhaps some psychological concepts are sharply defined, but Wittgenstein’s mature view of ethical concepts is that they are, so to speak, blurry. He writes in Philosophical Investigations § 77 that ‘if you look for definitions corresponding to our concepts in aesthetics or ethics’ then you are in the same position as someone trying to draw a sharply defined picture that corresponds to a blurry one. You can draw what you like, but you cannot claim that it is definitively correct. A similar conclusion about happiness is reached by Nicholas White in his A Brief History of Happiness: ‘If having a concept of happiness requires that it meets a high standard of clarity, then you might well say that we don’t really have a concept of happiness, or at least that it certainly doesn’t show itself in the history of philosophy’ (2006, p. 162). I think that this view is right, and will try to explain why. I also think that this is important. Daniel M. Haybron, one of the leading contemporary philosophers working on happiness, has written recently that ‘it is hard to see how we could possibly claim to understand human welfare without having any clear notion of what happiness is’ (2005, p. 288). Later in the chapter, I will discuss the implications of what I have to say about happiness for questions about what we should do to promote our welfare or live a good life." @default.
