- W2493874057 abstract "Anadromous fish are hatched in freshwater river systems, then migrate to sea where they spend most of their lives before returning to their natal streams as adults to spawn. A variation of anadromy applicable to arctic Alaska fishes is amphidromy; amphidromous fish spawn and overwinter in rivers and streams but migrate to coastal waters each summer to feed. They cycle annually between freshwater and marine environments. Amphidromous fishes of the Beaufort Sea are important components of northern Alaska's Native subsistence, commercial, and recreational fisheries. Fishery studies conducted in the Alaskan Beaufort Sea center on monitoring the effects of ongoing oil development operations in the Prudhoe Bay region. The principal concern has been the response of fish to construction of solid-fill gravel causeways along the coast. These structures, which extend for several kilometers seaward from the shore, are used in the recovery of offshore petroleum reserves and as intake sites for seawater injected into production wells. The most dynamic fluctuations in diadromous fish populations of the Prudhoe Bay region appear to be associated with naturally occurring physical and biological phenomena. Although the effects of the two existing causeways appear manageable, there is still room for legitimate concern over the cumulative effect of additional causeways. For this reason, further development should continue to be meticulously scrutinized by regulatory and permitting agencies to determine their ultimate effects on regional fishery resources." @default.
