- W2494119470 abstract "After the Second World War Britain had little fear that its African possessions were vulnerable to external aggression unless its position in the Middle East should collapse. Nevertheless, it was dragged into general considerations of continental security principally by South African and to a lesser degree by French pressure. The National Party government which came to power in the Union of South Africa in 1948 wanted either to join NATO or to play a leading role in a ‘regional defence organisation’ for Africa which would be closely associated with it — an ‘African Defence Pact’ or, later, ‘African Defence Organisation’. This policy was publicly justified by increasing reference to a direct Soviet threat to Africa and the sea lanes around it and, in tones only a degree or so less shrill, by insistence on a threat to East Africa from India prompted by the purported need of the Nehru government to off-load ‘surplus’ population. However, Nationalist anxiety to join the Western alliance seems to have been prompted in reality less by strategic calculations than by a desire to commit the European colonial powers and the United States to the racial status quo in Africa1 and to attribute black restiveness at home to Communist influence for reasons of domestic politics. For its part, French policy appears to have been shaped by a need to secure help in shoring up its increasingly tenuous position in North Africa and Madagascar, and by a desire to strengthen its prestige by playing a leading role in an area of low American interest." @default.
