- W2494142321 abstract "This chapter discusses the pathology and management of the diseases of cornea. The cornea is a transparent structure forming a window in the most anterior portion of the sclerotic. Owing to the continuity of tissue, spread of disease from other ocular tissues to the cornea and vice versa is comparatively common. Diseases of the cornea can be conveniently grouped under the following categories: (1) ulcerations, (2) infiltrations, (3) virus diseases, (4) degenerations, (5) dystrophies, (6) congenital abnormalities, (7) wounds, and (8) burns. Simple corneal ulcers are by far the most common of all corneal diseases and are almost always of exogenous origin. In view of the high bacterial content of the normal conjunctival sac, it is rather remarkable that corneal ulceration does not occur more often. The distinction between infiltrations and ulcerations is somewhat artificial because it is not always possible to say where the one begins and the other ends. Congenital abnormalities of cornea are conical cornea and megalocornea. Conical cornea is believed to be a result of a congenital weakness, which rarely manifests itself before puberty. Megalocornea is bilateral hereditary enlargement of the cornea, which affects males only and, unlike buphthalmos, is not associated with increased tension or cupping of the disk." @default.
