Nonetheless, the Rules for Testing Seeds of the Association of Official Seed Analysts (AOSA) do not include standards for seed moisture determination. The International Seed Testing Association (ISTA) makes provisions for seed moisture testing of several crops and includes cotton (Gossypium spp. L.) in the category for which an oven drying temperature of 103 +/- 1 deg C for 17 +/- 1 hours is recommended. The main purpose of this study was to delineate the best oven procedure for determining moisture in cottonseed by comparing the results obtained with the oven against the Karl Fischer titrator. The ground particle size and time required to extract moisture with methanol for titration with the Karl Fischer method had to be determined first. Moisture extraction was not affected by the mesh size utilised in the seed grinder. A minimum of 36 hours of soaking in methanol was required for all moisture to be extracted prior to titration with the Karl Fischer titrator. Removal of moisture from intact and ground seed in the oven was incomplete in a 30-hour period when the temperature was 103 deg C. However, moisture extracted from intact and ground cottonseed with the oven was equivalent to the moisture determined with the Karl Fischer titrator when the drying temperature was 130 deg C and the drying time was two hours" @default.
