- W2494242903 abstract "Throughout man's long history, many new technological steps have required to discover, and learn how to control new materials. This chapter examines the development of one or two important materials, which have proved vital to mankind's worldly success. It discusses briefly the story of copper, bronze, iron, and steel. The artifacts depend crucially on the still earlier development of flint working, which represent a major step forward in man's ability to make effective tools. Copper was initially shaped simply by hammering it; there being no method of joining pieces together and it soon became clear that this working of the metal caused it to become hard and brittle. The relatively slow take-up of ferrous technology resulted simply from the considerably higher melting point of iron, compared with that of copper. This chapter shows how technological progress determines man's ability to satisfy his many practical needs in ever more sophisticated ways, while it is fundamentally limited by his control over appropriate materials. One feature of metal technology, which made severe demands on man's ingenuity, was the need for high temperature furnaces in order to melt the appropriate pure metals or alloys and very similar demands are made by the struggle to perfect semiconductor samples." @default.
