- W2494354410 abstract "RNA interference (RNAi) in plants is a natural defence system against foreign genetic elements such as viruses, or extreme environmental changes such as drought. It can be adopted to develop drought tolerant plants through expression of microRNAs (miRNAs) and small interfering RNAs (siRNA). Endogenous miRNAs and siRNAs have been shown to play important roles in biological processes and regulate drought-responsive genes in plants under drought stress. These two classes of small RNAs provide a valuable source for genetic modification (GM) of crop plants tolerant to drought. GM of plants by introduction of genes has been claimed to predominantly give drought tolerance, but GM based on miRNAs/siRNAs as a tool to generate drought tolerant plants has not been extensively explored. By comparing genetically modified genes, miRNA and siRNAs offer more advantages. Firstly, miRNAs, siRNAs or miRNA/siRNA-like sequences can be easy to manipulate; Secondly, transgenics of miRNAs, siRNAs or miRNA/siRNA-like sequences produce no protein, which overcomes the public concern of so called ‘foreign proteins’ in transgenics; Finally, miRNAs, siRNAs or miRNA/siRNA-like sequences in transgenic plants can target a specific function, for example drought tolerance. In this chapter, we review biogenesis and function of miRNAs and siRNAs in plants, the mechanisms of plant drought stress and tolerance, responses of miRNAs and siRNAs in plants, especially in the cereal crops barley and wheat under drought stress, and strategies for functional analysis of miRNAs and siRNAs in plants and for the miRNA/siRNA-based genetic modification technology toward drought tolerant barley and wheat." @default.
