W2494520120 abstract "This chapter discusses the macroeconomics of the rural–urban migration of labour in China. It states that China is characterized by an urban–rural income differential that is large by international standards. The chapter also states that it is appropriate that China's migration experience be examined against this international yardstick, and begins by providing a theoretical framework for the analysis. It then goes on to present a macroeconomic overview of the phenomenon in China, though this broad approach limits the depth of the analysis. The next chapter analyses a particular case study in depth and develops precise tests of hypothesis. The chapter concludes that the rigid control of rural–urban migration was a cornerstone of the policies created and maintained the rural–urban divide in China." @default.
