- W2494669934 abstract "Publisher SummaryThe chapter assumes that pure folate deficiency on a nutritional basis could not be produced in man because of synthesis of this vitamin by normal intestinal bacteria. Biochemical studies provided the earliest indication of developing folate deficiency by a fall in the folate activity of the serum. This occurred after only three weeks of folate deprivation. An interesting sidelight of the present study is that the subject did not have a single cold during the four and half months of folate deprivation, despite the fact that the study period was October to March, and the study subject had frequent episodes of coryza every winter for the prior 17 years. The study demonstrates that nutritionally induced pure folate deficiency may be produced experimentally in man; delineates the sequence of events as such deficiency develops; indicates that normal human folate reserves are adequate for little more than a month; and presents a tool with which to define the minimal daily adult folate requirement. It would be interesting to study the effect of dietary folate deprivation on virus and neoplastic disease in man, just as it has been previously studied in the mouse." @default.
