- W2494898658 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter provides an overview of the use of computers in the control and recording of behavior. Research requires the control of the independent variables and accurate recording of the results. Computers permit experimenters to accomplish both goals more efficiently and economically. Computers can create and present unlimited varieties of antecedent visual and auditory stimuli, can arrange contingencies, and can define, record, and analyze behavior temporally, spatially, or in terms of other important dimensions such as force or location. Moreover, behavior can be studied at different levels of temporal integration, from millisecond by millisecond to aggregates over hours or weeks. Hardware and software exist for creating, arranging and modifying stimuli, and for manipulating numerous dimensions of the stimuli, including orientation, color, masking, and movement. The two main classes of stimulus production are stimuli generated intact by external devices, such as light bulbs and monochromators, and those generated by a computer, such as displays of textual material, graphic images, and auditory waveforms." @default.
