It begins by providing a history of the Radio Unit and the role of El Gazi’s leadership of the project in sharpening the vision and wisdom of Colombian citizens’ media pioneers. This history deserves attention because state initiatives truly committed to supporting citizens’ media are rare. The rest of the chapter explores the influence of these media pioneers on a new generation of community media that is driven by notions of cultura ciudadana (culture of citizenship), strong public spheres, and participatory democracy. Drifting away from older models of community media as spaces for militancy and political mobilization, this new generation of Colombian community media responds to contexts of armed conflict and marginality by creating communication spaces for citizens to begin repairing the torn social and cultural fabric of their communities." @default.
