- W249505318 abstract "ONE of the major areas of teacher education research for this decade has been teacher thought (Clark and Peterson 1986, Clark and Lampert 1986). A viewpoint about the value of research on teacher thought is that it can be used to explain preservice teachers' thinking and to understand heretofore less obvious aspects of teaching. If teacher thinking is placed into the framework of verbal self-regulation (Wertsch 1985), an extension of this viewpoint is possible. It is not that teachers are merely thinking and reflecting about teaching acts; the teaching act is seen as being guided and regulated by teacher self-talk. Specifically, to explain teacher behavior, one must uncover the means by which teachers learn to organize and direct their behavior. As teachers are diagnosing, analyzing, weighing alternatives, predicting, and deciding, they are talking to themsleves. They may or may not be aware of this running self-dialogue. Instructing teachers to monitor and to become conscious of their inner speech is a metacognitive goal often overlooked in teacher training. According to Good and Brophy (1984) teachers are not trained to monitor and study their own behavior. Accepting this as probable," @default.
