- W2495061212 abstract "Publisher SummaryThis chapter focuses on the electrophysiological correlates of reward processing in dopamine neurons. Animal behavior is influenced by salient, arousing, aversive, and appetitive events. Models of reinforcement learning capture how animals come to predict such events. Electrophysiological studies on dopamine neurons of the primate midbrain found that appetitive (rewarding), salient, and novel stimuli evoke burst firing, whereas aversive stimuli, such as tail pinch and air-puff, suppress spontaneous firing. More specifically, rewards elicit phasic bursting of dopamine neurons in proportion to the degree of mismatch between expected and received reward. This mismatch, called reward prediction error, appears to provide a teaching signal similar to that of formal learning models. Dopamine responses also show parallels with models from behavioral economics. They code reward value and risk in phasic and sustained components, respectively. These parallels with psychological and microeconomic theories suggest a fundamental role of the dopamine system in the control of reward-related behavior. In the review presented in the chapter, basic concepts from learning and economic theory are introduced, including prediction error, reward probability, magnitude, delay, and risk. It also summarizes critical paradigms testing the importance of prediction errors for learning (blocking and conditioned inhibition), and how the activity of dopamine neurons closely reflects core concepts of formal theories of reward function." @default.
