- W2495129009 abstract "It was just after 10 a.m. on 17 May 1977 when a large metal-grey Renault 30 drew up in the Rue de Grenelle in the sixth arrondissement of Paris. Before its doors had opened the vehicle was assailed by a great crowd of photographers, journalists and cinema and television cameras. The car’s principal occupant, and object of this frenzied interest, Georges Marchais, was, however, well used to dealing with such scenes even without the ominously burly bodyguards who surrounded him on this occasion. The press interest was perfectly understandable for ever since Marchais, at the age of fifty, became leader of the French Communist Party (the PCF) in 1970 whatever he does is news. His beetling black eyebrows and powerful, combative figure (he is a former metalworker and looks it) are, thanks to his formidable television performances, known to every French household. In many of them he is, almost literally, a bogeyman — one survey has shown that as many as three-quarters of French children have heard of him by the age of eight and, by a 3:1 majority, don’t like him.1 But among his own faithful, the 5.8 million who voted Communist in 1978, Marchais is a revered and commanding figure — young workers who approach him at meetings address him spontaneously as ‘tu’ and ‘Georges’. Nobody — least of all his political enemies — doubts Marchais’s power with such meetings, for his ability to combine biting sarcasm and a masterful irony with moving evocations of the hardships and wrongs of the poor make him a formidable public orator." @default.
