- W2495224261 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter discusses detection and estimation of impurities by thin-layer chromatography. Methods for detection and estimation of impurities in pharmaceutical raw materials and dosage forms are of vital importance to the laboratories of the pharmaceutical industry as well as to the official drug control laboratories. Thin-layer chromatography method is quite superior to previously used separation techniques, such as paper or classical column chromatography, in terms of separating power, simplicity, rapidness, and the sensitivity that can be obtained. In most of the thin-layer chromatographic methods for estimation of impurities, the separation is accomplished by adsorption type chromatography on silica gel. Sonanini suggested a thin-layer chromatographic method for separation of cardiac glucosides, and also reported on the application of similar partition chromatographic methods for the separation of tetracyclines and steroids. The main advantages of partition chromatography are that the R f values are generally more reproducible and that often a better separation of the components in a mixture can be obtained than with adsorption chromatography. A factor that limits the usefulness of this technique for purity testing, however, is the comparatively low capacity of the impregnated plates." @default.
