While I have plenty of feminist company in my turn toward psychoanalysis, the Freud I am using here is not quite the Freud who has been making recent appearances.1 As a historian of the nineteenthand early twentieth-century American South who remains tethered to a history project grounded in the archives, I find Freud is valuable mainly as an acute observer of nineteenth-century bourgeois society, as an analyst (no pun intended) who recognized the relationship between sexuality and identity. His writing permits unusually clear views into the ways in which social, economic, and ethnic hierarchies affected households and families, for he was accustomed to dealing with people in households that encompassed more than one economic class. Such vision enriches southern studies, which is still impoverished by exceptionalism and a tendency to see race as an opaque obstacle that blocks feminist investigation.
