- W2495403723 abstract "A HORMONE acting upon a cell to evoke a physiologic response is an event vital to organ and organism function. The hormone evoking the cellular response is the “primary messenger.” The activation of a cellular response, however, involves “secondary” messengers that are generated as a result of hormone-cell interaction and that are crucial to the expression of hormone action. The two most well-studied secondary messenger systems in hormone physiology are cyclic adenosine monophosphate (CAMP) and Ca. The purpose of this chapter is to outline the process by which free cytosolic Ca*& can serve as a modulator for hormone-mediated transport events. We will focus on (1) the generation of the Ca*’ signal, (2) the role of calmodulin, (3) the activation of transport events, and (4) the interrelationships between Ca“ and CAMP" @default.
