- W2495431328 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter deals with lysophosphatic acid and sphingosine-1-phosphate activation of G-protein-coupled receptors. Physiological functions of lysophospholipids (LPs) are mediated by cell surface receptors. The study begins with a brief history and nomenclature of the receptor describing its evolution and significance in cell signaling. All of the LP receptors are capable of interacting with a number of heterotrimeric G proteins with different affinities, and wide-ranging physiological responses are produced via the coupling of G proteins. This is explained in detail. Lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) and sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) are produced by the action of a number of different enzymes. As signaling mediators in vivo , the production and degradation of lysophospholipids must be tightly controlled. The metabolism of LPA has been partially characterized, and involves a number of convergent biosynthetic pathways and enzymes of varied specificity. There are multiple pathways responsible for LPA production and their metabolism involves a number of specific and highly conserved enzymes. Recent findings from the study of LPA receptor knockouts have identified effects on multiple other organ systems, including lung, cardiovascular, immune system, kidney, and gastrointestinal tract, that are likely to be expanded in the near future." @default.
