- W2495505715 abstract "The aim of this study was to investigate the depression and anxiety levels of the 9-14 year old students with learning disabilities with respect to some variables and to determine the relationship between the depression and anxiety levels of the students. The sample of this study consists of a total of 89 students of which 34 are female and 55 are male attending the special education classes of elementary schools in Konya. In this research to get information about the students and their families Information Form, to determine the students anxiety level State-Trait Anxiety for Children and to evaluate the depression level of the students Children's Depression Inventory were used. According to the results of the study significant differences were found in children's depression and trait anxiety mean scores with respect to some variables such as gender, age, number of sibling, educational level of the parents, preschool education and the level of income. SUMMARY Purpose and significance: Disabilities, with increasing experience over the past few decades in the field of special education, is growing worldwide. The definition of learning disabilities in DSM IV is as following: Learning Disabilities are diagnosed when the individual's achievement on individually administered, standardized tests in reading, mathematics, or written expression is substantially below that expected for age, schooling, and level of intelligence. The learning problems significantly interfere with academic achievement or activities of daily living that require reading, mathematical, or writing skills (Ozsoy, Ozyurek, ve Eripek, 1998). When we consider the role of anxiety and depression on personality and learning, we can say that students with learning disabilities appear to be at increased risk for severe depression and anxiety. So that it is important to determine the factors that have a significant impact on depression and anxiety levels of the children with learning disabilities, and it is also important for the preventative counseling and guidance interventions. Methods: First of all, in order to constitute the sample of this study a list of 22 primary schools located in the center of Konya which have special education classes was taken from the Konya guidance and research centre There were totally 317 students in these special education classes, 89 of which are diagnosed as LD, so that these 89 students constitute the sample of this study. This study examined the prevalence of depressive symptoms in a sample of public school elementary children age 9 through 14, 55 boys and 34 girls, identified as LD. In this research to get information about children and their families Information Form and to determine the anxiety levels of the children. State-Trait Anxiety for Children was used. Results: According to the findings of the research significant differences were found between the depression and anxiety mean scores of the children with learning disabilities with respect to variables such as their gender, age, number of sibling, educational level of the parents, preschool education, the level of income. Another finding of the research indicates that there is a positive meaningful correlation between the depression and trait anxiety scores of the children (r= .67, p<0.001). Discussion and Conclusions: Trait anxiety and depression mean scores of the female students with learning disabilities are significantly higher than the male students' scores (p<0.05). The depression and trait-anxiety levels of the students ages 12-14 are higher than the students ages 9-11. Significant differences were found between the depression and anxiety mean scores of the children with learning disabilities with respect to variables such as gender, age, number of sibling, educational level of the parents, preschool education, the level of income. In another finding of the research a positive meaningful correlation was found between the depression and trait anxiety scores of the children. According to these results in order to cope with anxiety and depression in students with LD practical implications applied in schools are suggested. To achieve this, counseling and guidance services, teachers and school directory should work cooperatively. *Doc.
