- W2495629028 abstract "In spite of the largely increasing use of Raman spectroscopy inresearch and development over the last few decades, it has, sofar, rarely been applied for quantitative measurements in analyticalchemistry and not at all as a reference measurement methodon a metrological level. Especially when it comes to criticalmeasurements in internationally regulated areas such as clinicalchemistry other tools such as mass spectrometry are applied. Themain factors limiting the application of Raman spectroscopy so farhave been the lack of reproducibility and sensitivity of the method.We will describe here, how these limitations can be completelyand simultaneously overcome by the application of isotope-dilutionsurface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (ID-SERS). This chapterdescribes the critical demand for SI-traceable measurements of ahigh accuracy in clinical chemistry, the application of this new tool tosolve the aforementioned problem and the analytical potential of ID-SERS beyond the limits of established analytical reference methods.With the continuing globalization of trade and economy, thereliability of measurement results of any kind is of increasingimportance. Traceability to recognized references, ultimately to theInternational System of Units (abbreviated as SI, from the FrenchLe Syste`me International d’Unite´s), is an indispensable prerequisitefor measurement results to be comparable and trustworthy. Thisalso holds for chemical measurements. Particularly in this fielddecisions and agreements on life and well being of each individualoften critically depend on analytical results, be it in medicaldiagnostics or by the monitoring of limit values in foodstuffs andenvironmental analysis. It is the central aim of current activitiesin Metrology in Chemistry to build confidence in the reliability ofchemical measurements and thereby afford both trade and societyan internationally recognized metrological reference framework." @default.
