- W2495881750 abstract "This chapter presents a motor planning-based account of how contrast is maintained in speech. In the absence of opposing forces, there is a tendency for assimilatory coarticulation to lead to sound change and loss of contrast. Current theories hold perceptual mechanisms responsible for opposing this tendency. Here a new mechanism is proposed for maintenance of contrast, based on inhibitory interactions associated with speech motor planning. Experimental results from vowel shadowing and tone shadowing experiments reveal subtle dissimilatory effects between contemporaneously planned articulatory gestures. A model is developed to illustrate how inhibitory interactions dissimilate gestural targets. It is argued that inhibitory interactions play a role in contrast maintenance on diachronic timescales and bias productions toward maximal contrast." @default.
