- W2496001876 abstract "Reptiles and amphibians are easily observed members of river and stream ecosystems. This chapter addresses the ecological role and some of the life history characteristics of five groups—three reptile groups (turtles, crocodilians, and snakes) and two groups of amphibians (salamanders and frogs and toads). All reptiles are terrestrial organisms, despite the fact that many of them are closely associated with aquatic habitats and spend considerable time in the water. They breathe air, and most leave the water to bask and to reproduce, and so spend only a portion of their time in water. Turtles are omnivorous, but crocodilians and snakes are carnivorous, thus they function, as a group, as secondary or tertiary trophic consumers in aquatic food webs. Fertilization is internal, although development may be either external or internal. They also share one other common trait—all are heavily preyed upon by man for various reasons—some reasonable, such as for food, and some unreasonable, such as the almost universal fear of snakes." @default.
