- W2496006843 abstract "There is little doubt that the New Literacy Studies (NLS) has achieved a paradigmatic shift in the study of literacy. While this shift has been slower to take effect in literacy pedagogies and policies, there is more and more evidence that the key tenets are circulating right at the level of teachers in their classrooms, as well as at the level of policy-makers in the corridors of power. In this chapter I aim to confirm the achievements of the NLS, while pointing to some tensions which have arisen in relation to its theoretical framework, in particular, the concept of literacy practices and the analytical relation between literacy events and literacy practices. With reference to data from my own ethnographic projects on literacy, I explore these tensions. I outline an approach I developed which focus on the movement of meanings across contexts and I explore the concepts of literacy events and practices in this movement, which I call transcontextual. I will also touch on the analytical move from the description of literacy events to the analysis of literacy practices. Both these ‘moves’ are related to the issue of scale." @default.
