In the 1970s, folklore as a scholarly discipline engaged the performance qualities of folklore directly, recognizing that stories are told, songs are sung, and celebrations and rituals are enacted.1 Still, Ireland remains stereotyped as a verbal culture, despite the obvious nonverbal components of music and dance, for instance. In contrast, in the six counties of Northern Ireland, life takes a more obviously visual turn: Belfast and Derry are known for the murals that adorn countless gable-end walls; thousands of parades a year punctuate everyday life, and public displays of flags have been highly contested.
