- W2496080677 abstract "Ireland is known for its performances: its storytelling, its music-making, its celebrations. Scholars who have researched these performative genres in the past have largely been concerned with their verbal aspects and have documented them as texts, although the sense of performance was always present in the work of such giants as folklorist Sean O Sûilleabhâin and others. In the 1970s, folklore as a scholarly discipline engaged the performance qualities of folklore directly, recognizing that stories are told, songs are sung, and celebrations and rituals are enacted.1 Still, Ireland remains stereotyped as a verbal culture, despite the obvious nonverbal components of music and dance, for instance. In contrast, in the six counties of Northern Ireland, life takes a more obviously visual turn: Belfast and Derry are known for the murals that adorn countless gable-end walls; thousands of parades a year punctuate everyday life, and public displays of flags have been highly contested. In total, traditional culture all across the island of Ireland (including the more emergent events mentioned above) shares qualities of performance that serve to put on display issues to do with politics and society, including gender, modernization, globalization, colonialism, and history, among others.KeywordsPublic EventFolk TraditionIrish CultureVerbal AspectPerformative UtteranceThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
