- W2496212581 abstract "This chapter refines the idea that verbalizer morphemes represent a class of functional heads of the category v, whose function is to transform a category-neutral root into a full-fledged word. The core question addressed is how to restrict the selection or projection relation between roots and the heads of their functional layers: if roots and category-defining heads could combine freely via the operation Merge, we should expect to find many more predicates in a language than are actually attested. To investigate how we can appropriately restrict the possible set of combinations of roots and category-defining heads, I investigate one morphologically uniform class of intransitive verbs and adjectives, concluding that it comprises at least three distinct syntactic subclasses: passive verbs, unaccusative verbs, and adjectives. Each subclass can be distinguished from the other two using syntactic diagnostics, including a new Palauan unaccusativity diagnostic that I call di ngii-predication. The theoretical conclusion is that the relation between functional heads and their complements is best analyzed as something like extended projection with feature unification, rather than selection. I conclude by showing how such a system can predict the syntactic behavior of newly coined predicates based solely on their understood lexical semantics." @default.
