- W2496288528 abstract "Ideal polyethylene (C2H4)n forms a planar carbon chain constructed with C═C and C═H σ bonds only. The unit cell contains two C2H4 molecules. The normal commercial low-density polyethylene is usually around 80% crystalline. The refractive index for amorphous specimens is 1.49. Light-scattering experiments by Partridge exhibits considerable scattering by thick polyethylene samples. Optical properties of polyethylene in the photon energy range 76-0.5 eV are measured by Painter et al. Various transmission techniques are used over nearly the entire range. Ritsko reported measurements on films of polyethylene prepared from solvent evaporation. They obtained values of the real and imaginary parts of the dielectric constants from measurements of energy-loss spectra and application of Kramers-Kronig (KK) analysis. The energy-loss spectra of an electron beam is recorded as a function of scattering angles or momentum transfer. The samples are exposed to the incident beam for five minutes. Because the energy-loss spectrum is proportional to the energy-loss function, the constant of proportionality can be determined by normalizing the spectrum to the known value of the refractive index 1.4907 at 2.22 eV." @default.
