- W2496355893 abstract "In the remarkably few gender analyses that have been written on The Tempest in the last forty or so years, feminists have focused almost exclusively on its one female character, Miranda, and have typically interpreted her position in the play as a romantic foil for Ferdinand or as a pawn in Prospero’s political game. Masculinity has been almost totally ignored as a factor in these analyses, and this chapter seeks to redress this imbalance by linking the powerful sense of manhood that the play navigates to mybook’s critically revised and readjusted New World themes. I seek, in particular, to sketch out some previously uncommented-on New World qualities in especially Ferdinand that are paradoxically distinctly Old World in their ideal. This chapter, which tries to trace and at the same time attempts to redefine a sense of New World relevance for the play, hears in Ferdinand echoes of both early modern European travelers to the American continent as well as many of the qualities that those same chroniclers attributed to the natives. Ideas of masculinity are central to this undertaking, and my argument relies on an understanding of New World manhood as a particularly acute and anxious version that could in many ways be said to be different from Old World manliness. Of course, I rely here on what some may perceive as fairly conservative yet firmly established and remarkably stable Renaissance masculine ideals, on commonplace ideas about what men should and should not be, about how men ought or ought not to behave,1 yet, with the advent of the New World, also how men could change—for the better—within accepted modes of male conduct." @default.
