Defense strategies of invertebrates, which lack antibodies and lymphocytes, are based on innate defense mechanisms. Cellular mechanisms of invertebrate innate immunity include wound repair, clotting and coagulation responses, phagocytosis of invading microorganisms, and encapsulation reactions. Apart from these cellular mechanisms, invertebrates possess a broad range of antimicrobial factors such as lysozyme-like proteins, proteases, cytolytic proteins, antimicrobial peptides, and enzyme activation-based cascades; humoral defense also includes lectin-like and pattern recognition molecules that are designed to recognize a few highly conserved structures present in many different microorganisms. The origin and development of mucosal surfaces, particularly the absorptive tissue associated with the intestine, represent the major evolutionary step that supported multicellular life. Mucosal surfaces phylogenetically appeared for the first time in coelenterates. The origin of the second opening of the digestive tract in coelomates with the tube-within-tube basic body plan present in nematodes, mollusks, annelids, and arthropods allowed further development of body pattern, organs, and organ systems." @default.
