- W2496474135 abstract "IN MANY ASIAN countries, traditional medicine exists side by side with modern Western medicine. Recently, both scientific and commercial interest in ethno Pharmaceuticals and their applications has grown appreciably. Scientists and developers have increasingly come to recognize that many local remedies work, are readily available and provide cost-effective alternatives to Western drugs. At the same time, Western medicine is being examined more critically. Many synthetic drugs have side-effects and sometimes environmental implications; there is a risk of iatrogenic (doctor-inflicted) illness with powerful Western drugs and highly invasive procedures; and patients complain that Western-style medical professionals are cold and uninterested. Moreover, according to the World Health Organization (WHO 1976), 85 per cent of people in developing countries still rely on traditional medicine as their first choice in human healthcare. WHO emphasizes that, if its goal of 'Health for All by the Year 2000' is to be achieved, traditional medicine perforce must play an important role in primary healthcare (ibid.). Traditional medicine is experiencing a revival in the veterinary sector, too. Beginning more than a decade ago, the Asian Office of the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) recognized the importance of ethnoveterinary medicine and commissioned a number of reports on its status in six Asian countries (FAO 1984a, 1984b, 1984c, 1986, 1991a, 1991b). All these studies found that ethnoveterinary practices could be usefully incorporated in animal health services. And in 1986/7, the Livestock Development Programme of the Asian Development Bank launched a project in Sri Lanka to institutionalize the use of traditional veterinary medicine at the national level (Anjaria 1986a). Most of the foregoing efforts have focused on ethnoveterinary botanicals. India is particularly rich in medicinal plants. An estimated 20000 plant species are found across India's highly varied topography and climate. Of these, about 2500 are used medicinally, and nearly 1300 have aromatic properties (Arora 1965). Considerable research has been devoted to India's medicinal plants and other indigenous drugs. So far, however, very little attention has been paid to their possible applications to livestock. Yet with concerted interdisciplinary research and systematic testing under field conditions, many traditional botanicals offer promise for the development of a thriving industry in veterinary drugs that often derive from age-old practice. This chapter describes the past, present and possible future of such developments in India." @default.
