- W2496708537 abstract "Learning, like other behavioral or structural traits, may vary in its usefulness according to the particular environmental problems an animal faces. Some learning abilities could be seen as adaptive specializations molded by natural selection to cope with particular ecological demands. The fact that opportunism is related to general differences in learning is not extremely surprising and may even be slightly tautological, given that both rapid learning and opportunism can be defined as an ability to modify behavior quickly in the face of environmental novelty. Relating gregariousness to social learning is obvious, but the link found in Columbids between group living and individual learning seems to be more counterintuitive. Throughout this chapter, comparative methods that can be used to test the hypothesis that social learning is an adaptation to specific ecological conditions are discussed. An alternative to the comparative approach would involve testing predictions concerning the use of social learning derived from optimality models. This result may be interpreted as an adaptation by which pigeons refrain from learning a skill that is economically unprofitable. Testing the specialization hypothesis could also involve the formulation of economic models predicting the ecological circumstances under which individuals should use their social learning ability. For what little data are tested up to now, there are no obvious ecological factors uniquely correlated with quantitative interspecific differences in social learning. Once confounding variables are removed, both Columbid and Passerine species that differ in opportunism or gregariousness show learning differences which seem to apply both to social and nonsocial tasks." @default.
